Well i didn't feel like going through all the previous questions to see if this one was one of them so im gonna ask now:

I have a web page.  With a tool bar ( buttons that are linked  ex. Home, Updates ) so how do i get it when i click the button on the tool bar it affects the main page not the page the button is in? Just can't figure it out.

it seems like you have frames?  You need to change the target of the button.
example:

<a href ="home.htm" target ="main_page">
        <img src="home.gif">
</a>

the "main_page" should already be defined if you have frames...such as

[default.html]
<FRAMESET COLS="175,*" frameborder="0">

        <FRAMESET ROWS="100%">
        <FRAME NAME="main_page" SRC="Main.htm" noresize MARGINHEIGHT=0                          MARGINWIDTH=0 SCROLLING=AUTO>

        <FRAMESET ROWS="100%">

        <FRAME NAME="bottom_of_main_page" SRC="toolbar.htm" noresize MARGINHEIGHT=0 MARGINWIDTH=0 SCROLLING=NONE>

        </FRAMESET>
    </FRAMESET>

</frameset>

hope this helps..
