though i now can get xf86setup to work and it sets up the server, when it exits and i try to start it again it tells me there were no valid video modes found. i am wondering how setup can load the server but trying to start it normally

XF86Setup starts a VGA server (the only one standard to EACH and EVERY video board), it's easy to make mistakes anyway...

You can have an S3 Virge and select an S3 server or something by the way... Why don't you try Xconfigurator (it will try to detect the board) or xf86config (less cool, but ...) and when you have it up and runnig, try again with XF86Setup...

No valid video modes means resolution/color depth combinations not supported by onboard video RAM/monitor scan frecuencies...

Good Luck,
