I own a 486 DX4 120Mhz with 16M RAM, and run Win98 (full version installed after formating my hard drive). Every time I select Restart, the "Windows is shutting down" window appears, and the computer freezes. Any ideas?

Hi,

Currently, Microsoft has a troubleshooter availiable for Windows98 shutdown problems.  Instead of listing every possible cause for this problem, i will give you the URL and you can walk through the troubleshooter yourself.  I have a feeling that your computer is not "beefy" enough to run Windows 98.  Before you can access the site, MS will require you to fill out a small on-line form with misc. data.  Here is the URL:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/tshoot/default.asp?PR=ALL&FR=0

Before you go to this troubleshooter, I have a suggestion.  If you have FastDown enabled, try unenabling it.  Here's how:

Disable fast shutdown.
Fast shutdown is a new feature included with Windows 98 that can signficantly reduce the amount of time it takes to shut down your computer. However, this feature is incompatible with some hardware devices and can cause your computer to stop responding if these devices are installed.

To disable fast shutdown

1)Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
2)Click Advanced, click to select the Disable fast shutdown check box, click OK, and then click OK again.
3)Restart your computer when you are prompted to do so.
4)Shut down the computer. Wait for the computer to shut down.
