     Hi,

Points are intangible ways of measuring or paying for someones' contribution to this forum.  The more points you earn answering questions, the more authority you possess, real or unreal, within a given category.  You can use points to encourage people to participate in helping you solve your problems.  And when this individual helps you accordingly, you reward him/her with your points.

I hope this "points" question is not computer related.  If so, you need to be a little more specific with your question.
