video CDs come in  xxx.DAT format and there size is about 600MB+ .. i need to split these files .. i can split using a small trick like .. first start copying the file to your hard disk and after seeing the percentage copied ..i use the task manager to end task .. the  problem you might have noticed is that  i can copy from one end only .. a partcular section from the middle is not possible .. my doubts are as following ...

1. is there a freeware/shareware  utility for to cut out a particular portion from the middle of a DAt file ?
2. do any one of you know the DAT format and info on it .. if we know the header and what it is made of may be we could  cut the header and attach the other section .. any suggestions on this is welcome ...
Knowing the format details , how do we write a utility to split .. any suggestions
3. or is there any short cuts as i have mentioned above ..

dankh ,
i did check out the site as you said and tried a few splitters also . if you read those intros to the SW , it is clearly mentioned that those arepackages to cut the files for the sake of esier upload or to floppies !!!
my requirement is this .. the dat file is around 700MB+ and i have no intention of using 500 odd flopppies to copy them..
you have a file for 700Mb (let's say 70000 frames etc) and i need to get, say frames from 10000 to  25000 ( i.e from a particular offset to another position ) .. i can use linux : head , tail, cut utilities  to cut out and concat pieces .. but i need to get the HEADER of the DAT file to be appended to it , more over i need to get the know the frame header etc...

inshort , what i am asking for is  a possible CD Ripper ( like the ones you have for AUDIO Tracks ) ..where you can cut out a particular portion of the movie alone  alone  !!!

DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING LIKE THAT  OR CAN ANYONE HELP ME OUT ???
