I know there is a way that one can disable the autosave feature on reports, tables and forms.
i have set up command buttons to carry out these tasks but when closing down, i receive the
error "...database is either read only... cancel save? how do i disable access 97 auto save feature?
so that the only way to save is clicking on the buttons?

On a form. Have your closing button use this code.

docmd.Close acForm,"Form Name",acSaveNo

Generally it should be possible to do something like this.

In the OnError event for your form/report insert the following lines.

MsgBox(DataErr)
End

When you close down you will get the usual error messag, but also the MsgBox will tell you the corresponding error code. Then you can have code like this.

if DataErr = FoundErrorCode
  ' Don't care
Response = False ' Don't show the message to the user.
Else
msgbox(DataErr) ' Show other errors. This line may be commented by putting a ' in front.
End If
