There are a few ways to accomplish this. As longe as you are using the same level of OS, you can just use the 'savevg' command, which will backup anything in the Volumegroup specified.  It will not make a bootable image of the rootvg.  'smit mksysb'  will make a bootable tape of the rootvg, but will not backup any other vg's.  


You should be able to use the 'rcp' command to copy the files from one system to the other over the network.

I am looking to find out if I have to create the volume groups or am I just able to dump all the information and the dump from tape or what ever I use will create the volume groups.  It seems to me that when you do a rcp it will place all the information into the root partition and create the file directories in the rootvg.  We have multiple, and I mean multiple mounted partitions.  I need to recreate the test machine the same way that the production machine is.

their is more but - I need to know "Do I need to create the volume groups and logical volume groups on the test machine", and if so what is the correct and not quick ( but correct ) way to do this so that the test machine is word of word the same as the production.  

Where do I find the correct information that I need from the production server.  The correct vg's and lvg's and anything that I might need to know for the test machine to be "WORD FOR WORD" like the production server.
If you use the savevg methiod,  you will have to create the vg, but it will create the lv's.
Usage:  savevg [-i] [-m] [-e] [-b blocks] [-f device] vgName

-i      Create the <vgname>.data file.
-m      Create the <vgname>.data file and physical partition maps
-e      Exclude the files/directories listed in /etc/exclude.<vgname>
-b blocks       Number of 512-byte blocks to write in a single
                output operation
-f device       Name of device to receive the backup information.
                Default is /dev/rmt0
vgName  Name of Volume Group to backup.

The data files will allow the vg's and physical volumes to be restore as they were on the other system.
