Opening Large Files

I have a friend who is new to Mac. She is trying to open large files and gets the error msg: file to large to be opened by simple text. On a PC, notepad defaults to write.exe if the file is too large. What is the program that will open her files?

I like these kind of answers! I would rather have someone tell it like it is, in plain English, than go into some long drawn out techie talk!
