Opening Large Files

I have a friend who is new to Mac. She is trying to open large files and gets the error msg: file to large to be opened by simple text. On a PC, notepad defaults to write.exe if the file is too large. What is the program that will open her files?

yeah simpletext is only designed to open files 32k and under...use claris works or god forbid, word.

I like these kind of answers! I would rather have someone tell it like it is, in plain English, than go into some long drawn out techie talk!
