Visual C++ Communications Port Access

I am writing an application that needs to communicate to an outside machine, a battery charger, via RS-232 serial connection.  The charger sends information in ASCII followed by a carriage return. How do I go about writing code to handle communication between my applicatin in Visual C++ and the battery charger?
