What causes a SPARQ cartridge unreadable. I have a problem where half of my cartridges are unreadable. I have lost confidence in this product. Please advice me if some has had similar issues with it

I'd guess from what you've said that there is a hardware problem in the drive itself.  From what I've heard, the SPARQ is plagued by some quality/relibility issues.  I've got one myself and haven't had any problems but there's been a lot of discussion about problem such as your in the USENET newgroups.  You should contact Syquest support for advice.  I also wouldn't put any more of the good cartridges in the drive at this point.  It's very possible that the drive is damaging the disks.

I believe it was in comp.os.linux.hardware where I've seen a lot of discussion about SPARQ.
