The TNT router on  which we dial in endorses PAP as well as MSCHAP authentication. Problem is that when dialing in with MS-os the router automatically switches to MSCHAP. I know that there is a way to force PAP auth. with a script. Can anyone plz point me out what the string should be?

PAP sends clear text as the password to the PPPLOG.TXT file.
Better to use CHAP (encrypted password)
goto Network -> Dial-up Adapter -> Advanced -> LOG FILE should be yes.... this will create a PPPlog.txt file in C:\WINDOWS

If you run PAP the PPPLOG file shows the users password in clear text.... It is encrypter when using CHAP.

thanx for the proposed answer.. i've switched recording log file on and tried again. still the router wants CHAP. in addition i changed the key HKL\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP to value EnablePlainTextPassword "1" , which enables win98 to send passwords as plain text.

It still is not working......

The problem is more complicated. The TNT router runs on a PTT system which endorses CHAP as well as PAP. When it recognises a windows client it will always suggest CHAP. My client will send the CHAP information (i can't block it?!) and the router sends the CHAP information to the RADIUS server which returns an errorcode because it only has a secret PAP file for me :(
