Where can I download a free copy of linux?

From various sites. Try:

http://www.slackware.org/
this is the slackware distribution site; they have a link for a ftp site that has the files.

There is also the ftp site SunSite UNC:

ftp://sunsite.unc.edu

look in the folder /pub/Linux/distributions.

There you have the debian, red hat and slackware distributions. But be prepared, it's a huge download.

As alternative (but not for free) you can buy some books or cd-roms that are not too much expensive and bring some distributions on cd-rom.
