Assert error

I have just installed "MechCommander". It starts out fine
i go through the menu and then i start the first level its suddenly shuts down and gives me this message:

But its always either one or the other.

try out the following things :
1. make sure that your sound and video card drivers are DirectX 5.2 compatible.
   [if you do update directX dont forget to restart]
2. get the update pack -ftp://ftp.microprose.com/pub/mps-online/new-versions/update.exe
3. shutdown background prorgams such as AV , ATI etc.. they might interfere with the     operation of the game.
4.Try setting your resolution to 640x480 8bit color.
5. open prefs.cfg [MechCommander main dir] with wordpad/edit.com(?) and change the
    following line DirectDraw=t to DirectDraw=f
         -psychorakz

How do i check if my hardware is DirectX compatible?

Im preety sure i have all DirectX stuff itself though (just got
DirectX 6)
