can Macafee included in win98 be upgraded in terms of virus definations?  if so can you send the web address?  Might I be better off using Norton AV 2.0 on the system over Macafee?

AJ,

You certainly can download the DAT files for Windows 98.  However, you need to check what version of Mcafee you have.  That is, the engine version.  They have upgrades for the 2.x and 3.x engines at this website:

As for which Virus scanner to use, it is subjective.  I have tried Norton AV and Mcafee and i like both.  However, i choose Mcafee because it appeared to not have "bogged" down my system as much.  Also, NAV is a tad faster at scanning for viruses than Mcafee (just minimal).

Also, both versions have what is called an autoupdate.  That is, you can instruct the program to connect to the internet and download the updates and install them for you.  I don't know what version of Mcafee you have, but mine allows me to do that with the Virus Scan Console.  Check it out.
