Chess games

Hello people.  I have several questions regarding chess programs for Win32 platforms.

1) What are the best chess programs for an intermediate player to improve his game?  The quality of the UI is of little concern.

2) Are there any good shareware/freeware chess programs as in #1?

3) What are the best shareware/freeware programs that allow two players to play a game of chess over a network, check legal moves etc. but will NOT aid them in any other way (no AI)?  This time the quality of the UI *is* important.

Please provide as much info as possible.
Please include URLs.

Thanxalot!

Thanx.  I'll check this out.

Where can I get more information about chessmaster 5000 and extreme chess?
What are the main differences between them?

Any good human-vs-computer sharewere programs?

There is something called GNUChess, it free but doesn't teach.  Just plays very storng chess.  Extreme chess has the best engine money can buy.  It's has betten grandmasters.  but doesn't scale well to beginner chess players.  It has an excellent move analysis, which I sometimes find usefull.  Chessmaster scales well, but the engine isn't as good, or the anaylsis.

Do chessmaster and extreme chess have demo versions so I can see what they are about before I buy?
Not that I'm aware of

One last thing.  I still need the answer to #3.
The program you recommended requires connecting to an internet chess server.  I need something that will enable two people to play over a LAN that is not connected to the internet.
GNU chess allows you to set up a chess server on your lan, which would provide you what you looking for.  It not the easist thing to setup though.
