Here's the code I use:

Declare these:

Declare Function WritePrivateProfileString Lib "kernel32" Alias "WritePrivateProfileStringA" (ByVal lpApplicationName As String, ByVal lpKeyName As Any, ByVal lpString As Any, ByVal lpFileName As String) As Long
Declare Function GetPrivateProfileString Lib "kernel32" Alias "GetPrivateProfileStringA" (ByVal lpApplicationName As String, ByVal lpKeyName As Any, ByVal lpDefault As String, ByVal lpReturnedString As String, ByVal nSize As Long, ByVal lpFileName As String) As Long

--------------------------
Example INI file:
[System]
beep=none
ports=1
temp=yes
--------------------------

To get variables from the INI file:

ret% = GetPrivateProfileString("System", "beep", "", tempvariable, 4, "c:\windows\example.ini")

This reads "none" into tempvariable. Everything is pretty self-explanatory, except the "" in the third parameter. That is the default value you want if there is a problem retrieving it from the INI file.

Now, to write back to the INI file:

ret% = WritePrivateProfileString("System", "beep", "none", "C:\windows\example.ini")
