CD-ROM plays audio only

A friend of mine has a problem.  The only CDs her CD-ROM drive will play are audio CD's.  It does not recognize data CDs at all.  I know nothing about the system except that it uses Windows 95.  Any help would be appreciated.  It will be at least 2 days for any response to an answer as I won't see her until tomorrow to pass along any suggestions.

Now THERE'S a problem you don't see every day.

Does the CD drive show at all in W95? In DOS? Any error messages?

u may need an updated driver.remove the cd driver from the multi
meadia and go to add new hardware in the control panel.choose no
on the search for hardware and then go to cd-rom find the brand
model and the times.if its not there and the rom is old
you have to find a dos driver on the net or somthing.COOL

I will leave this posted for awhile so everyone can see.  It turned out to be a virus that was causing the problem.  She wasn't sure what but apparently it can be picked up by a current virus detector.  I will leave this posted for awhile and then delete it.  Hope this can help someone else if they come up with the same error.

Right click on My Computer icon. Select Properties.
Select Device Manager tab.
Double click on Cd-Rom.
Double click on your Cd-Rom driver.
Choose Settings tab.
Select "AutoInsert notification" box.

If this won't work. Download TweakUI. There you'll be able to select "AutoPlay data CD" box
