Windows 95 network printing error

While printing under 95 to a network printer I get the following error

There was an error writing to //Morton_thornton********* for the printer [HP Laser Jet 4 Plus]
Incorrect function.

When you initially install the printer it will print a test page and word documents but after a reset or a couple of minutes the error message comes up. The printer is connect to a Intel netport printserver connected to a Novell network.

Can anybody shed any light on this problem or ways around it?

Thanks

Ummm, on the basis of the error message it looks like the intermediate print queue file was ahving problems. This can somtimes be cause by the server being low on disk or the user having a disk space restriction.

If that's not it try installing the printer and use the LASERJET SERIES II driver instead of the LJ4. Most everything will work with the LJII driver and it's the "lowest common" denominator of printer driver. Data formatted for a series II will print correctly on all higher model printers.

Put the print queue on hold and then submit the job. Watch for the job to go READY. If the job gets to the READY state without any error then the print queue is OK. If the error happens after the queue is released then there is a printer side problem. Conversely if the error occurs before the job becomes READY then look for a disk space limit issue.

Make sure that there is no queing enabled within windows. Double queues (Windows and Novell) can often get confused.
