i'm looking for a public domain search engine that will search throught the content of over 8000 text files, i guess by either a, taking a keyword and searching through all the files and listing the files with the keyword in it, or b, using a bot, make a dictionary-type catalog that lists the files that have the keyword in it and when the keyword is entered it is refferred to the catalog and lists the pages.  or something along the lines of that:)

windark,

I had the same requirement about a year ago.  ozo very kindly helped write a searchable database for me in PERL as I could not find a suitable public domain one.  The script was in 2 parts.  The first one was run to create the index of terms and then a second one did the searching a returned matches.  You only needed to run the first when you changed stuff on the site.  It was very fast and very efficient.

The question relating to this is:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/topics/Q.10024773

It goes into quite some depth and has full source code.  There was a follow up question which may not be any use but if you look at my profile and look at the questions I have asked under CGI there are some useful pointers.

If you are looking for a public domain search script already out there then I would suggest looking at either of:

www.cgi-resources.com

and

www.cgiresources.com

both have an excellent list of scripts for all languages to do various jobs.

Hope that helps.

Trevor.
