Why does this happen..? Whenever I play a regular audio CD in my G3 or 6100, it works fine. But, when I play an enhanced CD, (such as the Squirrel Nut Zippers' latest) it stops playing whenever I save or open a new file.

Since an enhanced CD contains multimedia information, it must be queried by the MacOS, which interrupts the operation of the SCSI device, in this case, the CD-ROM. A non-enhanced CD does not experience the interruption because the Mac has been told (by the definition of the media's format) that the CD is "audio only" and can, therefore, be safely ignored. The exception is audio extraction programs, which need to include code to specifically tell the MacOS to interrupt the CD-ROM that the MacOS was previously told (definition - audio) to ignore.

I'm sorry... while you did answer the question, you did not solve my problem. The question should have been...
How can I play enhanced audio cds on my Mac without the CD stopping every time I save or open a file?

hmmm...

There is no solution in my databank (brain, head, noodle, etc.) at this time. I will research the issue and get back to you or another expert will solve the mystery for you.

This may or maynot fix it.  But it's worth a shot.
Reset your disk cache, increase it.  The Mac OS caches files and it maybe caching the CD's directory.  If it set to low, it will have to refresh itself every time you attempt to save.
Also try turning off Virtual Memory. I don't have an Enhanced CD, so I can't try it.
Just a shot...let my know.

I found the answer on Apple's website. This is a problem they are aware of.. and they're trying to fix it. There's no solution at this time.
