Hi
I need an email client to run on a mac which can be automated using applescript and/or prefab player. The client must be able to handle multiple users and be able to retreive mail from a POP3 server on the LAN.
We are already running a script on startup on our mac network which mounts users required server volumes and launches client software, logging on using the username and password supplied.
I want to add the ability to check local email automatically for an individual user. I have tried this with Outlook Express, however the dialog to select a user does not respond to input from "prefab player" correctly. I can get prefab player to type a username but the selection in the list box alters for every keystroke (ie typing "ian" will select the first "i" then the first "a" etc).

Alternatively does anyone know whether there is a telnet application which can be controlled by Applescript. With this I could just telnet into the server and check for a users mail.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Eudora Pro will do what you want.  You'll want individual Eudora preferences file (and Eudora folder) for each user.  You'll need to check the "Save password" option in the "Checking Mail" Settings pane.  Then the following AppleScript will work (tested with Eudora Pro 3.1.3):

on run
      tell application "Finder"
            open file "<insert_full_path_name>:Eudora Settings"
      end tell
      
      tell application "Eudora Pro"
            connect with checking
      end tell
end run

Thanks for the input.
I have not tried it out as I do not have Eudora, but I am sure it would work.
I have made some progress anyway with the discovery of the "TCP/IP Scripting Addition" I can talk to the IMAP server directly and find out if there is any UNSEEN mail for a user. This is ideal as I only really want to throw up a dialog for the user to inform them of new mail waiting.
Know anything about ResEdit? I have just posted a question if you can help out.
