Reinstalling Office 97 Professional

Recently when I installed my Windows 98 upgrade and also did some installation for some small softwares downloaded from the internet, I noticed that my Powerpoint 97 in Office 97 Professional Upgrade Version was not working. I first tried uninstalling the Powerpoint 97 and reinstalling hoping that it would solve the problem. Then it was looking for Kernel32.dll file. To make sure that there were no missing files in the OS I did a reinstallation of my Windows 98 again, which was successful.

With the advice from a friend I uninstalled the whole Office 97 and then reinstalled Office 95 first before installing Office 97 as that is an upgrade version.

The problem came after this. Now everything cannot be launched and also the Office shortcut does not appear.

When I tried to launch the Powerpoint 97 it was looking for missing MSO97.dll file. I found the file in my C drive and copied it over to the Office folder. The logo launched but not the programme. I tried launching the Words 97 and it tells me I am out of memory, when I have 128 MB Ram.

Please advise, as I am getting very frustrated with trying to reinstall the Office 97. I am now relying on my Office 95 to do my work.

This is to me is a very difficult problem - especially when I do not have any idea what is going on. I have the software that cannot be reinstalled.

Office is a very tricky Installation and un-installation.
Here's a tips page for office:
http://www.microsoft.com/magazine/guides/tipsguid/tips/office97.htm
-------HERE'S SOME OF MY DOCUMENTATION ON IT.
To remove Microsoft Office 97 from your computer, follow these steps:
1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Office 97, and then click Add/Remove. If
you installed Microsoft Office from a CD, you are prompted to insert the first CD.
If a dialog box appears and notifies you that programs are running, quit the programs, and then click OK.
3. In the Microsoft Office 97 Setup dialog box, click Remove All.
4. When you are prompted to remove shared components, click Remove All.
If you are prompted to restart the computer after Setup is completed, do so.
5. In Windows Explorer, delete the following folders:
Program Files\Microsoft Office
Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared
Program Files\Common Files\ODBC
Windows\Temp\Vbe
NOTE: Deleting the Microsoft Office folder also deletes the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart folder which could
contain personal files. Ensure the all personal files are removed from this folder before deleting it.
NOTE: Deleting the Microsoft Office folder also deletes the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Temlates folder which could contain
personal templates. Ensure the all personal files, including custom macros, are removed from this folder before deleting it.
6. In Windows Explorer, delete the files in the following folders.
Windows Folder
-------------------

NOTE: The is the name of the user who is logged on to the computer. If multiple users log on to the computer using different user
names, each user has separate .acl and .pcb files. All of these files can be deleted.

I have tried using the solution you have given, cos there are so many things that I have to remove from the system. I also have a Microsoft Publsisher 95, do I also need to uninstall this cos this programme also works together with Office 95/97. I am presently running Office 95, do I have uninstall this and start deleting those files as highlighted in your solution.

Your answer seems to be pluckd from MIcrosoft Homepage, which I appreciate - but I would appreciate your personal advice especially if you have tried it.

Thank you.

No ben,
I havn't tried it. others have though and it works. As you know, MS products want to take over your system and write everywhere.

Office is a tricky setup to say the least.

I actually plucked that information from my on site.
You may want to re-open this question so other tecks whio may know more about Office can help.

I need someone with a hands-on answers to my problem. From the answer given there are just too many files to delete - then again with deletion of file in the Windows registry - can actually prove dangerous - unless someone can assure me that there would not be a problem.

In anycase I do appreciate Smeebus's answer - would like to give him 20 points for his effort. For 200 points I really need someone with a good hands-on answer.

IT, Stop Being Called Into Every Meeting

Highfive is so simple that setting up every meeting room takes just minutes and every employee will be able to start or join a call from any room with ease. Never be called into a meeting just to get it started again. This is how video conferencing should work!

ack -- to the registry editing stuff.

Suggest you visit the MS site and find out if REGLEAN.EXE works with Win98. (Does with 95 and NT). If yes, that should clean out the registry entries after you have uninstalled.

No guarantees but...
1. Uninstall apps
2. Run REGLEAN
3. re-install apps

Hope this helps!

Regclean does not clean references to uninstalled applications.

Find out by goint to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Then look for Office, There may be an Uninstall String.
Copy it an run that from Start>>Run

Dear Bud

With the help of an expert friend I managed to reinstall Office 97.
Though your answer is so exhaustive covering every files of Office 97 that could be left as remnants in the system that have to be deleted. More so files in the registry that can be dangerous to delete unless the person doing is very conversant with Windows 95/98 - Your answer has provided with some basis to work on.

My friend did not touch the registry files but deleted all the remnants files of Office 97 that could be found in the disk. That did the trick.

I really appreciate your effort in trying to resolve my problem. More so your help in pointing to me the place where I could get more information.

I know you did say that it is not about points that you have rendered advice to me. But I am really touched by your effort to assist - so please do claim the 200 points that you deserve - in order to make it as the top expert.

Bye and thanks.
