This is not an easy task. I've used HIJAAK with limited success. The root of the problem is that AutoCAD represents drawings as a collection of geometric primitaves, lines, circles, etc. A .GIF/.BMP/.JPG/.PCX/.TIF image is a raster, that is, a collection of colored dots.

Converting from a pattern of dots into lines, etc, is computationally *very tough* and most software that I've seen does a very *marginal* job. One package essentailly turned each dot into a colored point. Now this is technically a "conversion" and the AutoCAD drawing sort-of looked like the original, but you wound up with a HUGE data file that wasn't very good for CAD work.

Another problem is that there is no dimensionality to a raster image. Unless you know the details of the optical chain that produced the image there is no specific size associated with a pixel. Generally when you want a CAD drawing, you want dimensionality information as well.

About the best way to capture files is manually. I've seen applications that replace the AutoCAD screen background with the scanned image and then you "trace" the drawing with lines, circles, etc. Not appreciably faster than drawing from scratch. Other methods are using a digitizing tablet, etc.

Anyway, the bottom line is that if you can live with a real primative image in CAD HIJAAK will do it, but if you need fidelity there's no solution.
