To see the icon of your appliction besides a file you need to register that file type with Windows.  IE: You need to tell the os that this file is of the type that your application understands.  The system will then take the icon from where you specified it or your application.

I will refer you to

Article ID: Q122787

in MSDN. All the registry keys needed to associate a file type with your application is described there.  If you need help in finding the article just post a comment and I'll tell you how.
