What is the symptom being hacked by the program "strobe"?
Is there any trace I can use to track down who was hacking?

Strobe uses a bandwidth-efficient algorithm to scan TCP ports on the target machine and reveal which network server daemons are currently running. Version 1.03 is an update to 1.02.

given that information, hackers can use other known exploits to attempt to break into your system..

to defend against these types of attacks, install TCP/IP wrappers, turn off unneeded/unused services, install up to date security patches from your vendor.. install a firewall to block unwanted traffic... etc. etc. etc.

see url  http://www.deter.com/unix/  for information on/copies of  Strobe, TCP/IP wrappers, and other "hacker" and "security" tools..
