Frontpage 98 on Windows 98

Since installing Win98 over Win95 with IE4.01 I am having problems with Frontpage 98 and the personal web server when I try to connect to the default web site there is a long delay and then an message appears saying an unexpected error has occurred. The error logged in frontpage.log is

06 Oct 1998 20:19:07 +0100:  Error updating 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft FrontPage\version3.0\temp\_vti_inf.html' - didn't find the WebPost/FrontPage section
06 Oct 1998 20:19:07 +0100:  Error #d000f Message: Unexpected HTTP error code: 200
06 Oct 1998 20:19:07 +0100:     (OS Error #200 Message: <HTML><HEAD><TITLE>Browser Error</TITLE></HEAD>

<BODY><H1>Browser Error</H1><P><P>Your Browser sent a malformed request

</BODY></HTML>

I have completely uninstalled FP98 and re-installed but to no effect. I cannot find any references to this on MSDN can anyone help.

Try saving file to a mutual, easily accessible folder. Then, download to FTP from that folder. Also, make sure your dial-up/password configurations are correct. Many people make the mistake of giving too much info in FTP clients. Do Not try to transfer a file directly from 95 to 98. I know that when I upgraded I needed to reconfigure my dial-up. The conversion rendered an ISP that I discontinued over a year ago (or thought I did....). This all sounds so simple, but sometimes we braniac types over-think the problem, instead of looking to the obvious solution!
The best solution is to create a whole new folder to export your HTML to. I have a briefcase renamed 'Jen's Backpack', for example that is strictly devoted to my web page authoring.
Hope this helps,
Good Luck!!!

I don't understand the answer I am not using dial up networking but rather I am authoring a web on the Microsoft personal web server installed as part of the Frontpage 98 installation. The error occurs when I try to connect to this on the same machine rather than any external server.

i don't know if this will help, but you might try the following if you have not already done so:

1. uninstall the personal web server and then reinstall it.  it almost sounds more like it is a pws problem.

2. if pws is ok, then uninstall both pws and frontpage and be sure that you delete the left over folders that might contain donfiguration information.  then reinstall from scratch.

3. as a last resort (i had to do this one time).  uninstall pws and frontpage and then carefully go into the registry and remove all keys associated with frontpage and pws.  then reinstall.

Just to let you know that there's a newer version of PWS that can be downloaded from Microsoft.  It's included in the NT 4 OptionPack for WIN95.  You get new version of PWS and ASP plus some other web related enhancements/programs.  You can find the option pack at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/contents/Updates/NT4OptPk/default.asp?custarea=bus&site=family&openmenu=&highlighteditem= .
