I am trying to create a vb module that will insert data into a word document that has bookmarks embedded in it.
In the vb4 microsoft course notes it says that you should be able to use the wd.editgoto "bookmark" method to position the cursor at the bookmark. However, in word 97 this does not work.  What can I do ?

the editgoto was replaced with GoTo wherein you specify what

Try this (replace BM1 with the name of your bookmark):
  wdDoc.GoTo What:=wdGoToBookmark, Name:="BM1"

Or to go to the 4th bookmark, use this:
  wdDoc.GoTo What:=wdGoToBookmark, Count:=4
