Hi All
This is a rhetorical question, as I have already created the component. However, I am having some trouble cleaning it up and need help. Points will be only be awarded following a lively exchange of ideas.

At the risk of sounding trite, I would simply use the standard TListView shipped with Delphi. You can provide custom drawing for the cell you want to place the icon into for details views. Everything else that you mention you want to do appears to be covered by this component.

Was there a reason why you decided not to use TListView?

Hello RWilson
I am extremely embarassed. The functionality in TListView is precisely what I have been trying to program. I was under the impression that TListView only provided large-icon type views, but I am evidently wrong. I thought I knew the VCL pretty well, and I had never given that component a second glance.
Thanks for opening my eyes. The good news is the transition should not be too painful, as only a small part of the code was working around the limitations of my original method.

Regards,
Edo

PS You aren't trite, you're absolutely right. Don't laugh too hard at me when you post an answer.

Here it is: Use a TListview (I'm not laughing - I've done similar things ...)

Cheers,

Raymond.
