The X windows needs a Windows Manager to run, and additionally, a Desktop. KDE is a Window Manager and a Desktop. You cannot start X windows without a Windows Manager. If you want, you can change your Windows Manager in $HOME/.xinitrc

Each user should have a .xinitrc in their home directory. If you are using KDE, it usually contains a "startkde", or in fact, the lines that startkde (in the KDE bin directory) contains. If you download or have another Windows Manager, you should change the .xinitrc to the Windows Manager necesary commands. Look at the Windows Manager documentation to know how to activate then.
