1.
When the "Starting Windows 95" screen appears, Press F8
and select...
DOS Prompt only
CD into WINDOWS directory
Type
ATTRIB -H -R -S SYSTEM.DAT
ATTRIB -H -R -S SYSTEM.DA0
ATTRIB -H -R -S USER.DAT
ATTRIB -H -R -S USER.DA0
to unhide the required files....

2.
COPY SYSTEM.DA0 SYSTEM.DAT
COPY USER.DA0 USER.DAT
to overwrite the registry with the backed up versions

3.
Reboot the system. If that works, then skip the rest...

If it doesn't work follow these directions
1.
CD into the Windows directory again
This needs to be done again....under the Windows Directory in DOS
ATTRIB -H -R -S SYSTEM.DAT
ATTRIB -H -R -S SYSTEM.DA0
ATTRIB -H -R -S USER.DAT
ATTRIB -H -R -S USER.DA0
to unhide the required files....

*****WARNING: BEFORE ATTEMPTING THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS MAKE SURE YOU HAVE COPYS OF 32-BIT SOFTWARE THAT IS INSTSTALLED ON YOUR SYSTEM. THIS SOFTWARE WILL HAVE TO BE RE-INSTSTALLED WHEN WINDOWS IS FIXED TO REINSTALL IMPORTANT SYSTEM FILES DLL'S ETC.
PROCEED WITH CAUTION!!!*******

Type
DEL *.INI
DEL SYSTEM.DAT <ENTER>
DEL USER.DAT<ENTER>
DELTREE SYSTEM <ENTER>
Answer 'Y' to the last command
The last command i.e DELTREE SYSTEM, may take a while to complete, especially on a 486. Bear with it, it will be worth your while.

Re-install Windows 95.
This should get your system well again!!!!

Good luck and I hope it works for you, it did for me!!

c:\windows\edit system.ini

under [386Enh] type mouse=*vmouse
