Does anyone know what should I know to become an expert in 3D graphic?, should I require to learn other graphic software such as AutoCad or LightWave?

How can I start to design from 3D Studio, what tool should I know? What is the best in the 3D Studio Max?
Is 3D Studio Max is the best 3D graphic software designer? if not Can you tell me what is the best software usually use in design 3D graphic?

Hi Lewis_loo,
Deciding what tool to use depends on many things, such as;
1) how long do you want to take to learn the tool
2) what kind of animation you want to do
3) how much you have to spend

In regards to;
1) 3D Studio Max has a much larger learning curve then Lightwave
2) 3D Studio Max has character studio, which makes for quick character animation
3) 3D Studio Max is considerably more expensive then Lightwave, and requires more memory to run then Lightwave

It is my opinion that if you are new to 3D modeling, that you should choose Lightwave.

Good luck, with your decision.

Sincerely,
Jason

From what i've been told/learned,  both Alias and SoftImage are considered to be good programs in working with 3D.  Although AutoCad is a 3D application, I believe  it's usually more appropriate for architectural and design purposes. A lot of people will create something (a building for example) then bring it into 3D Max to apply materials and textures to the meshes. I personally have used 3D Max because it's what was convenient, but I believe it's considered to be sort of the "Upper Middle" class of 3D applications, good but not the best.  However, I don't know what the ratings are on the new 3D Max 2 that came out this year.  If you want access to some FAQ lists on 3d/computer animation you should check out this site:   http://www.tsfx.com/faq.html
Most of all, if you're really interested in becoming a pro in 3d, it wouldn't hurt to contact some of the most prominent 3d graphics & animation companies and finding out what skills they're looking for in their job applicants.
Good luck!

3D Studio MAX specially the release 2.5 one is really powerful just like Lightwave, Truespace, or SoftImage. Different from them, AutoCAD is not commonly used for 3D designs. Actually you use AutoCAD to draw some splines or drafts then build the 3D model based on those splines using 3D Studio. To become an expert in 3D Designs takes a long time, step by step and needs patience. If you are new to 3D Studio and you're interested in 3D Studio MAX, you may start with designing simple models like wine glass, airplanes, buildings by using standard or primitive geometries. Then after you feel comfortable with those tools, you may continue to design faces and other detailed organic things with NURBS or meshes. Actually 3D Studio is powerful because of its capability to design very complex material. Most artists use Lightwave or SoftImage to build the model and assign the skins and materials through 3D Studio MAX. Like I've just said, 3D Studio and others are very powerful but none is the best. If you are to produce "perfect" 3D scenes, you should try to combine them altogether. However, i can say, 3D Studio MAX is adequate to produce detailed 3D scenes quickly. Good Luck !
