hello everybody.

i just purchased a 333MHz g3 with 128MB ram and am looking to find a good, if not the best, pc emulator.  i love the mac, but alas there are more than 5 times as many pc software titles available...

so my question is, which does a better job of recreating the windows (95 or 98) environment, softwindows or virtual pc?
please make the comparison with same/comparable versions of each (i.e. SW with w95 vs VPC with w95 and 98 vs 98).

thanks.

most definitely Virtual PC 2.1. Preferably with windows 95 installed as 98 sucks up precious resources and will slow you down. SoftWindows is nice for people with limited usage but severely lacks in game support and may not even run some applications. Here i have successfully run Starcraft PC on a 9600/350 with quite decent speeds through VPC. Softwindows has issues even opening it.

weed.

thank you for responding.  i'm afraid i may have to play devil's advocate...

if you point to www.insignia.com/SoftWindows/Mac/Products/98_virtualpc.html

there's some evidence to believe game rendering on SW95 is equally (if not, arguable, more) fast as VPC2.01.  now, i know the page compares certain older versions (of both softwares) for there data graphs, but the versions seem comparable for each test, i.e. 95 vs. 95 and 98 vs. 98.

upon looking at connectix's site: www.insignia.com/SoftWindows/Mac/Products/98_virtualpc.html

some of the same comparisons for the win'95 versions (i.e. winbench97) and even various winstone98 tests and winbench98 tests, SW98 came out ahead (well, this was from the insignia page).

of course, no company would display poor results (meaning, a failed test for their product against another's) and since both 98 versions seem optimized for the g3 processor, i would like further info on how this would translate to emulation on this machine, meaning system resources are there for the taking.  from what i recall, i think virtual pc uses more resources in terms of ram and hd space than softwindows.  and this info i got from comparing the boxes for system requirements, side-by-side...

so i guess i have to know which version of which software would be the best overall performer (most likely, games) for my system.

any more suggestions?

thanks, once again.

still VPC. You have to remember that SoftWindows is a hacked up sort of windows. It is windows but not REALLY. VPC IS windows and therefore has all the functionality (or lack thereof) of windows. Softwindows as of yet still does not support many programs. Specifically programs that are graphic intensive such as games.
