CD drive sometimes "not accessbile"

I am getting "not accessible" "The device is not ready"
errors only on some CDs and not others. Sometimes a CD that
I that I was able to access an hour/day/week before now
is inaccessable. All CDs are clean, all autodetect, autoplay
features have been turned off (same problem with them on).
Hardware manager says the device is working properly. It is
a Sony CDU 311 in a Sony PCV 70 almost 2 years old. The
CD player is only infrequently used. A good example of the
problem is that only 3 of 4 almost new CDs in my Corel Draw
7 set work, 1 does not. But they all worked last week.
If this is a driver problem I will need to know exactly
what to do as I don't know how to install drivers.
Hope someone can help.
Thanks, Paul

This problem seems to be related to one of the following:

1. Bad connection (data) cable attached to the CD-ROM unit
2. Some problem with the servo control motor that spins the CD
3. Some problem related to the laser assembly

First, try to replace the data cable for a new one. If it doesn't work, remove the CD-ROM entry in Control Panel/System/Device Manager tab and let Windows find it at the next boot (if it's Plug-n-Play compatible). But be aware that if it isn't, you'll have to reinstall its drivers.

If these 2 tips doesn't work, try to use some of that CD cleaner kits - the problem may be just dust.

However, if all else fails, replece the drive by another one (you could try to install a friend's another drive in your computer, just to be sure the problem was in your drive...).

I hope this may help you, cyber-friend.

This all sounds reasonable. But if I take your advise
and get to the point where I have to reinstall the
driver (asuming that the drive is not plug and play)
how do I do that? I've never reinstalled anything.
Thanks

I have 2 PCV90's with Sony CDU 311's. When I had my 3rd bad CDU 311 (same problem a youe's) Sony tech admited the 311 had problems with the laser lens and replaced with CDU 611 (24X).
Now your problem is Sony replacement parts cost 4 times retail. (all mine under warrantee) and your CDU 311 has no face as face is part of case. I would take your CDU 311 to your local computer store an see if they can take the face off a Sony CDU 611 or CDU 711 (32X) and make it fit.

I see what you mean about the face plate.
If the CD is bad why not just leave it there and
use one of the remaing empty bays for a new CD
drive?

That would work if you are not using them. Just unplug cables from old and into new.
Installing CD drive other than Sony may cause Recovery CD not to function. Here is a link to Sony's solution for that problem.

I suggest making a Bootable floppy as decribed at the above site if your CD drive still works befor it dies completely.

Sony also suggests cleaning CD drive with a CD laser lens cleaner, but I found that only to be short term solution. Eventually cleaning didn't work.
