Open the machine and place the new hard drive on either the spare IDE cable or the same IDE cable connected to you other hard drive, depending on your own preference. Make sure the IDE cable is the correct way round. The red side usually faces the power supply socket, but not always. Find a spare power cable within the case and insert this into the drive.  If the drive is on the same cable, change the jumper settings on the disk to slave and ensure the old drive is jumpered to master. If on the other hand its on the spare IDE cable set the drive to be master. Turn your machine on and auto-detected  the hard disk size via the bios. The drive should then be ready for formatting.
