I want to convert a BMP (or other common image) into a usable format to be entered into an array
(In java, Pascal or similar)  Does anyone know of any free/shareware packages which will do this.

BMP is very simple format. It is

Header - image size and ...
Palette (if <=256 colors)
Image line by line from bottom to top

Say your e-mail and i'll give you BMP-loader in Pascal or BMP-format full review

Source code for BMP, GIF, ICO, and PCX formats is provided in a simple image support library (load, save, & display) documented in "Visual C++ Power Toolkit" by Richard Leinecker and Jamie Nye, Ventana Press, copyright 1995. This library is written for use with Visual C++/MFC but all of the source code is provided (as well as a CD) so you could pull what you need from that.
