Macintosh systems tend to use faster processors and have overall better hardware. While the chips use the same Mhz rating as their PC counterparts (intel) they use a different instruction set which is much more optimized. As far as the software goes the MacOS has VERY few security holes if any while windows is riddled with them. There are actually programs out on the net designed to exploit the windows holes and allow people to remotely controll your PC without you knowing it. MacOS especially in graphic intensive applications is also written to be faster than windows. The PC people will argue that windows opens applications faster. This is true but once IN the application the MacOS runs them faster and carries out their functions sometimes twice as fast as windows (most notably photoshops gaussian blur which is a VERY intensive calculation). Now if youre only going to be using a commputer for checking email and writing papers by all means buy a PC with windows. You dont NEED a mac for that. If however you want to do graphics or in general ENJOY your operating system buy a Mac. I should also note that Macintosh hardware can RUN windows and thus all of your windows software. I have at times run windows and had the MacOS running in the background and been able to switch freely back and forth. This is just not possible on the PC side as their hardware isnt robust enough to handle all of those operations. So if youre into gaming you can get the best of both worlds. Run the MacOS on mac hardware because its faster and much more stable (and there are lots of great games for mac ONLY) and run Windows (VirtualPC) on top of that for all the PC games. Ive been playing PC starcraft on my mac for the last few months.

so thats the lowdown on the two platforms. I may sound biased but there are statistics to back up the faster processors.

Well in the long run probably the Mac as MacOS X will soon be available. It is the "write once, run anywhere" OS. MacOS X will also run on intel systems but not with the speed it would run at on a mac as its optimized for the PPC chip. It is based on a UNIX kernel and so is as fundamental as you can get as far as programming goes. It will have a MacOS like interface and you will be able to run MacOS 8.6-<?> through it thus being able to test your apps in all environments.
