Hi

I installed SMTPMTA on my Notes Server (Sparc, Notes 4.5.5a) and I can't make it work. Here the server output, when it's startup the SMTPMTA:

09/11/98 08:41:34     SMTPMTA: Starting
09/11/98 08:41:35     SMTPMTA: omsgcnv Starting
09/11/98 08:41:36     SMTPMTA: osesctl Startup complete
09/11/98 08:41:37     SMTPMTA: omsgcnv Release v4.5.5a (Intl)1 July 1998
09/11/98 08:41:37     SMTPMTA: imsgcnv Loading SMTP MTA Configuration
09/11/98 08:41:38     SMTPMTA: imsgcnv Initializing SMTP MTA ICH I/O
09/11/98 08:41:38     SMTPMTA: imsgcnv Release v4.5.5a (Intl)1 July 1998
09/11/98 08:41:39     SMTPMTA: isesctl SMTP Protocol Stack initialization failed
09/11/98 08:41:39     SMTPMTA: isesctl Inbound Session Controller failed to start
09/11/98 08:41:39     SMTPMTA: MTA startup completed
09/11/98 08:41:39     SMTPMTA: omsgcnv Initiating shutdown
09/11/98 08:41:39     SMTPMTA: omsgcnv Shutdown complete
09/11/98 08:41:39     SMTPMTA: imsgcnv Shutting down
09/11/98 08:41:39     SMTPMTA: isesctl Shutting down
09/11/98 08:41:39     SMTPMTA: isesctl Shutdown complete
09/11/98 08:41:39     SMTPMTA: imsgcnv Shutdown complete
09/11/98 08:41:41     SMTPMTA: drt Startup complete

Is there a problem with the SMTPMTA, or is it the 4 documents, that has a wrong configuration (Server-, Global Domain-, Foreign SMTP Domain-, and SMTP connection document) ?

I've been here, it is not pleasant. All the documents you've listed have to be exactly right for the beast to work at all. Other than the fact you've got this can you send e-mail from the system?

One thing I found useful was to put the SMTP.box and inbound and outbound conversion databases onto the desktop so you can see what is going on. If anything :-)

You may want to upgrade the SMTPMTA or even the domino server.  Other than that I would suggest renaming or deleting the smtp.box, inbound, and outbound work queues and then starting SMTP again.  When it restarts it will recreate these databases.

I have found the problem.
the bindsock file, which Notes use to communicate with port 25 (smtp) has to run as root (sysadm) or else it can't start. After changing permission on the file, it is running ;-)

I am running SMTP MTA on solaris and had to disable sendmail, as it was taking control of port 25 before the MTA.

Sendmail was disabled, but it must have been in the installation of the SMTPMTA, something went wrong. But again, after I changed permission on the file, it is running fine.
