Can anybody point me in the right direction. I would like to obtain a copy of Linux but have limited time to look for it. I live in Sydney Australia. I would prefer to buy a copy on hard media otherwise a download would do.

Many thanks.

www.cheapbytes.com will sell you a linux distribution on cdrom for US$1.99 plus shipping. They also have books on Linux, as well as packages of other linux cd's. I recently got the package with 5 distributions on cd plus 3 cd's of free software, all for less than $25 including shipping. If you are new to linux, I would highly recommend getting a book along with a distribution - it will help you over the inevitable rough spots.
