PowerMAC 7300 freezes after sleeping

My Power Mac 7300/200 has problems coming out of sleep mode. If you put it to sleep, you can't wake it, it just freezes. If I let it go to sleep by itself, it would wake normally until recently.  Now it freezes after sleeping no matter how it went to sleep requiring power off/on to reboot.  It is running OS 8.0.  How can I get sleep to work properly?  Does it work properly under OS 8.5?

The problem is sometimes solved by updating your HD Driver and MacOS. Use Drive Setup 1.5 or 1.6.1 and upgrade to at least MacOS 8.1. Some 7300's HD's will not sleep properly even after this fix. You must set your HD to NEVER sleep if such is the case.

You may have one of the drives that require a firmware update which can be found at:
ftp://ftp.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/US/Macintosh/Utilities/Firmware_Utilities/

The upgrade to 8.1 is free and can be found at:
ftp://ftp.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/US/Macintosh/System/Mac_OS_8.1_Update/

Drive setup is at:

-Good Luck

Thanks for the advice!  The machine actually belongs to my son who is a college engineering student.  I will pass this info on to him but advise him not to attempt any fixes until  his semester break and to upgrade to 8.1 especially since its free.

I had severe freeze problems on my 7300/166 with both system 7.5.3 and 7.6.1
and with a warm start the mac wouldn´t even find his boot disc.
I tried everything out - invain - till I put a system enabler in the system folder
And it´s really crazy it doesn´t seem to matter which one it is .
I had 702 or something ,now I have 827 and it works perfectly ,try it out  .
I´d really wish to know why  ,if somebody could tell me.
