The version of XFree86 that comes with RedHat 5.1 does not fully support the
Riva TNT chipset, that explains your problems getting the resolution to go beyond
320 by 240. (I'm assuming you're using XFree86 and not metroess, but this should also work with metroess)

What you'll have to do is replace the X server that came with XFree86 with a new one
that supports the Rina TNT.

go to:

http://dimension128.smartcom.net/drivers.html#SVGA X-servers

and download the NVIDA glibc RIVA X-Server. This is a file called XF86_SVGA.gz.
uncompress it with a gzip -d XF86_SVGA and copy it to /usr/X11R6/bin. You might want
to name it XF86_SVGA_RIVATNT so it doesn't overwrite your original XF86_SVGA server (if there is one already there). Make sure XF86_SVGA_RIVATNT is executable, do a chmod 755 XF86_SVGA_RIVATNT

next, cd to /etc/X11 and do an ls -la. You'll see a file in there called X which is a
symbolic link to your existing X server (probably ../../usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA)

you need to rm that link, and then do:
ln -s ../../usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA_RIVATNT ./X

that will setup the new X server as your default X server. Now try running startx, and
hopefully, you'll get a better resolution. Remember, you might have to adjust your resolution with Ctrl-Alt-(Numeric Keypad +) and Ctrl-Alt-(Numeric Keypad -).

if you want to get back where you started all you need to do is re-establish the symbolic link it XF86_SVGA by:

cd /etc/X11
rm X
ln -s ../../usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA

If this doesn't work, there's a good chance that any resolution beyond 320 by 240 is not
configured into your /etc/XF86Config file. Try running Xconfigurator again and selecting higher resolutions. Once you're done with that, you'll have to recreate the symbolic link to your XF86_SVGA_RIVATNT X server.

Let me know how it works, I've got my eye on the Diamond 550 another Riva TNT based card.

Thanks. Works fine, but ctrl-alt-number results in a gray screen.
