Can you recommend a shareware program which can convert CD Audio to mp3 format? the quality should not depend on the quality of the sound card i.e the program should be able to directly convert CD Audio to mp3 and not 'record' it. Additionally it would be helpful if the software could record in mp3 format from the line in of the sound card.

Of course i can =)
there is a really good one, which converts directly, it's name is Audio Catalyst and can be found at http://www.xingtech.com/products/audiocatalyst/. On my Celeron 300A it needs even less time than the track actually takes, a really great program !
I can't think of any program that does Line IN --> MP3 directly, i suggest you take the usual WAV --> MP3 way.
