anybody has  info on any reliable Internet access providers in NewYork city area.  I have a pentium running Redhat.

I've tried a number of ISPs in NYC...I can recomend escape.com.  Unlimited usage, V.90, good service, not too many busy signals.
I also use a Pentium running RedHat, by the way.
