Can common Mac fonts (Palantino, Espy Sans, Helvetica, New York, Times etc..) be downloaded anywhere for free (in which case, does anybody know where?), or are they only available on Font CDs?
Thanks.

The fonts that you listed, with the exception of Espy Sans, are part of the MacOS. If you want to use Adobe versions of the fonts, you have to pay or pirate.
