mimeTypes File - What are the contents?

My Netscape 4.06 browser displays htm files as text instead of formatted html.  Looking at the Apache 1.3.3 webserver logs I can see it is telling the browser that it is an HTTP/1.0 file.
Someone told me I need a mimeTypes file on the server.  What  should the contents of this file be?
