I am looking for a utility that allows me to convert
postscript to PDF under Linux, preferably GPL.

Alladin's Ghostscript  5.0 can accomplish this. it isn't Gpl  but is free for non-commercial use.    Alternatively you can wait for Gnu's ghostscript to contain this functionality.  This will probably happen by april.
