Epson 8000 prints junk before & after print job

setup an epson 8000 on Unix 9000 box running hp-ux 10 with a jetdirect box hanging off it, printout is always preceeded by:
@pjl job name = "job:blue-xxxx; user = root"
xxxxxx@pjl enter language=hpgl
IN;

then after the print job this prints
more of the pjl gumpph

What model of jetdirect box is it?
What is the firmware revision of that box?

This question was awarded, but never cleared due to the JSP-500 errors of that time.  It was "stuck" against userID -1 versus the intended expert whom you awarded.  This corrects the problem and the expert will now receive these points; points verified.
