I am assuming you have the install disks or CD that came with your computer, probably System 7.5. Restart using the disks or CD that came with your computer, and do what is called a "Clean install." To restart with the CD, put the CD in the computer and open the Startup Disk control panel and select the CD, and restart. Name your old (system 8) system folder something like "old system folder" and run the installer. Once it's done, you will have to copy any control panels, extensions, fonts, etc. from the System 8 folder to the new/old System folder.

I'm assuming by "downgrading" you mean you want to keep all your 3rd party (non-Apple) extensions while replacing the system software 8 with system software 7.5. If you dont have a lot of 3rd party system extensions, than it is OK to trash the system folder. Just boot up with the CD that came with the computer and you can trash your hard drives System folder.

If you DO have a lot of 3rd party extensions, you may want to keep some of them. This really isnt recommended as it can cause more problems than it fixes.  My advice would be to make sure you cant fix your current installation of Mac OS 8 before trying to downgrade with a bunch of 3rd party extensions. Have you tried just using "Apple Extensions only" in the Extensions Manager control panel?

One utility you might find useful is "Clean-installer assistant" which will keep track of of previous install and let you "copy over' the 3rd party extensioins. You might be able to use this and not have to completely trash your system folder. Here is the URL.

the second answer was the best but i formatted my hard rive and installed system 7.5. Do you know of any programs that split files in half. Gor exampl i turn a 3 meg program into 2 1.5 so i can put it on disk and combine the programs together(make them back into one program) again so i can get large programs off my dads computer .

Hi NellyJelly,

Yes, you can use Stuffit Lite to do that. Stuffit Litewill let you compress a file so that it is smaller (3 megs might become 1.4mb), and you can "segment" the resulting archive into parts (you can specify 1.4mb parts). Stuffit Lite is shareware.

You can get Stuffit Lite at:
