How do i use a filter on a Text Layer?

I can't seem to use a filter on a Text layer i just created.  For example drop shadow, when i try to do that it just tells me i can't do it
and the text is the only part of the thing i want.  How do i use a filter on a text layer

You should create not text layer, but text-selection (type mask tool) , then apply needed filters/effects.

So i guess another way would be to make a duplicate layer of the text thing.  Then to edit that right?
i think i have it thanks.

You can do some effect with type layer
1. Layer > Effect
2.  before you want to use filter with type layer you should convert it to normal layer from Layer > Type > Render Layer then you can use any filters you want but  the text will no longer editing anymore.
