Autoincremental fields in Access 97 with D4 & BDE

My autoincremental fields are not incremental by 1 but by a random number. is there a setting which tell the bde to increment in this manner.

I have an access 97 database that I am using the BDE to access. Everything
works fine except for the autoincrement field. It produces random results
rather than a sequential increment. On one machine it increments by 5 and on
another it is 6. I tried reinstalling BDE and that did not help.
I am using the most current, 5.0, that came with Delphi 4.0. I have installed update patch 2. If anyone can offer an assistance I would greatly appreciateit.
This is common problem with access when you have default values together on the same table.  Remove  the default values and the Autoincrement feature will work.

Default values on the field in the access table seem to increase the autoincrement number by 1 more than the number of defaults.

If anyone has a reason for this i would like to know as I think it must be a fundemental problem with the BDE.
you guess correct it is problem with bde as you say
