The most populr/common way is to use Internet Config API calls.

If all you want to know which application handles a shockwave movie, and feed the movie to that app, Internet Config is the app.

The way it works is you call it and pass it the URL (possibly a file based URL) with the address of the movie.

Internet Config will consult it's database (which is user-configurable) and see what application can best handle that type of file.

Voila - you're all set...

The URL for Internet Config 2 (and it's API and documentation) is:
<ftp://ftp.stairways.com/stairways/>

Let me know if you need more info...
